Palmetto treats: Gelato at its finest

Today's post talks about an Italian treat that I could eat all day everyday; and that treat is Gelato! I know what your thinking, can southerners really make gelato. Well they can actually. If you are heading to downtown Charleston in South Carolina, I highly recommend making this your dessert stop!

Belgian Gelato was opened in 1926 and has been in operation for quite some time now. Located on 324 King Street, this local shop will surely satisfy anyone's sweet tooth. But y'all are probably wondering what gelato is and its history. Well please, allow me to explain it to you!

Gelato is the Italian word for ice cream and is derived from the Latin word Gelatus which means frozen. Gelato first popped up in Sicily, Italy and now is something world wide that you can even find it in your local freezer section of your grocery store. But enough about the history, let me tell you about the sweet treat that was purchased when I went to this great find!

Nestled in this tiny cup was Chocolate Peppermint Gelato. Take one spoonful and you will feel like you have William- Sonoma's Peppermint Bark in your mouth. But it doesn't stop their, after it is scooped into this tiny cup, I had it dipped in dark chocolate, which formed a shell around the gelato and finally topped with whipped cream. Now come on, don't tell me that this picture doesn't make your mouth water and now have you craving chocolate peppermint gelato!

But this location has more to offer than just Gelato; you can get specialty coffees, frappelatos (a scoop of gelato blended into a delicious milkshake), an Affogato ( a scoop of gelato covered with a shot of espresso) and so much more. This is definitely a place where every member of the family can find something they want to have to satisfy their sweet tooth!

So what do y'all say... have I indulged your craving for something chocolaty and sweet? I sure hope so cause this is definitely a spot you will want to keep going back too, or one to stop at on your trip through Charleston!

Now remember the next time you are wondering where to go for a good meal, sweet treat or homemade recipe, come right here and this southern girl will take care of you.
