The Palmetto State cooks things up Southern Style

Ahh the joys of southern cooking. Their really is nothing like it. Tons of butter, grease and love, you really don't have a losing combination. Now what I am about to share with you is one of the most southern dishes of all time, and you can guarantee you will find it on most traditional southern tables during any meal (except breakfast obviously).

Now for this recipe you are going to have to pull out your crock pot. Y'all know me and this kitchen appliance; I am in love with it and think it is the most under utilized appliance in the kitchen. So after you pull your crock pot out of the back of your cupboard, make sure you spray it really well with cooking spray (or you can use one of those bags that make cleaning up super quick and easy). Now whose ready to grab some ingredients and start cooking?!

Wait wait wait... y'all don't even know what we are cooking. Keep reading and I'll tell ya as well as show you a picture. Then we can start gathering ingredients. Okay let's go!

So pictured right y'all is one of my favorite southern dishes of all time... Macaroni and Cheese. Nothing tastes any better than good old southern, home cooked mac n cheese. Cooking on high for four hours, you too can have this mac n cheese in your home in no time. Let's gather some ingredients shall we?

Ingredients
  • 1 box of Elbow Macaroni
  • Cheese (Velveeta, Cabot, anything you like)
    • about a block or two of cheese
  • Milk (1 1/2 cups)
  • Evaporated Milk (1 12oz can)
  • 2 Tbs of EVOO
  • 1/2 cup of melted butter
  • Shredded Cheese (to garnish if you like)

So here are the steps to making this super easy dish

  1. Cook elbows until they are to your taste
  2. toss pasta in oil
  3. pour pasta into crock pot
  4. Add Cheese, Evaporated Milk, Milk, and melted butter into crock pot
  5. Stir and set crock pot on high for four hours
And BAM! in just a few short hours you have creamy, delicious macaroni and cheese. Stir occasionally during the cooking process. Mine typically takes less than the four hours.. probably around 3- 3 1/2. Eat just by itself or add it as a side dish to your meal.

For me I paired my mac n cheese with a tomato, basil and mozzarella chicken breast. But honestly you can have it as a side dish to any meal. It also makes tons of leftovers and stays well in the fridge.

So have I made your decision on your next meal choice? I sure hope so! The next time you are wondering where to go for a good meal, sweet treat or homemade recipe, come right here and this southern girl will take care of you.
