The Palmetto State takes Italian upscale
Ahh the joys of Italian food. Y'all know how much I love Italian food (and I mean being Italian it is kind of in my blood). So this next location is one that I was super excited to try not only because I heard amazing things about it but because it was my 24th birthday celebration dinner. So whose ready to see how I treated myself on my 24th? Well keep reading to find out y'all.
Pictured left, nestled away on upper King Street sits Indaco (526 King St). From the outside you would never picture Italian, but take a step through the wooden doors into the coziest restaurant I have found in all of Charleston (but their is still a lot to discover, so for this moment this is the spot). Indaco is unique to the Charleston area because it offers rustic italian fare and some of the low country's best wood-fired pizzas. Now how could you say no to that? Well quite frankly you can't; but once you see what I had you will go yourself. So come on keep reading, their is still a lot to hear and see!
Now since it was my birthday and all, I decided to go all out and treat myself not only to an entree, but to an appetizer as well (and i mean it's Italian food so I couldn't help myself and not get more than one item). So let's get started shall we? Okay for my starter (yes I shared with the whole table), I ordered their Prosciutto Di Parma. Now how much more Italian can that sound? Served on a wooden board sits Parmesan, Prosciutto, honey, Honey crisp apples and flatbread. Now here is my recommendation on putting this together; take a piece of flat bread, then place a piece of prosciutto, apple and parmesan on top. Drizzle with the honey and there you have it. One insanely great bite. Now don't get me wrong, i thought each ingredient complimented each other perfectly but if I could make one suggestion it would be to have a fig jam instead of the honey. Now this is only my suggestion but I think either one would pair perfectly with this.
Now you can see pictured left what it looks like when it is all assembled. I literally was taking little bites of this because I didn't want it to be gone to quickly (and trust me, when you eat this you will do the same exact thing). Now I didn't get a cocktail or wine with this dish, but I could imagine having a nice white wine with this entree because the dish was sweet from the apples and honey but a little salty because of the prosciutto. Now if you aren't a white wine person, not to worry, you order whatever you prefer (I only give suggestions, but take them how you wish).
Alright, now on to the entree! If you are not one to go out of your comfort zone with food combinations, then you can stick to the Margarita pizza that Indaco has to offer; but if you are like me and want to try ingredient combinations you never thought would taste good, then you are going to like what I ordered. A little skeptical at first, I listened to my co-workers and ordered what I now consider one of the best pizzas I have ever had, and one I would go back and order again.
How do you feel about brussels sprouts? What about on a pizza? A little hesitant to try it (don't worry I was too), but let me banish your fear about it because this is hands down one of the best pizzas I have ever had. Between the crunchy, thin crust, fresh parmesan cheese, slices of thin apples and obviously the brussels sprouts, this pizza is out of this world. Cooked to perfection, this pizza is one that you definitely have to order when you arrive at Indaco (I mean have I ever steered you in the wrong direction?).
On the pizza comes Honeycrisp apples, Ricotta, Dark Honey and pancetta. Now does any of that right their sound bad at all? You are probably thinking "all together it does!" But trust me on this y'all, it is amazing. The honey really completes the dish and brings all the flavors together into one perfect bite of pizza (which I didn't even think was possible). So want to give it a try? Did I ease your fear of Brussels sprouts and pizza? Well I sure hope so!
